Frontal fibrosing alopecia
Frontal fibrosing alopecia was described in 6 postmenopausal women by Kossard, in 1994, under the name "postmenopausal frontal fibrosing alopecia". This condition was characterized by progressive fibrosing alopecia secondary to atrophic recession of the frontotemporal hairline, extending over the preauricular region. The histological picture corresponds to perifollicular fibrosis with lymphocytic inflammation around the isthmus and infundibular portion of all follicles within the affected area. Although in this initial description it was believed that only the terminal follicles are affected, it was posteriorly demonstrated that this process occurs in both the terminal follicles and in the intermediate follicles and vellus hair (7).
